Protected characteristics

The nine listed 'protected characterises' detail the core characteristics identified by the Equality Act 2010 which require the heightened level of protection from discriminatory practices.

The nine characteristics are as follows:

  1. Age
  2. disability
  3. gender reassignment
  4. marriage and civil partnership
  5. pregnancy and maternity
  6. race
  7. religion or belief
  8. sex
  9. sexual orientation.

The majority of the characteristics are afforded the same anti-discrimination mechanisms by virtue of the Act unless it expressly states to the contrary.
