08/12/06 : Gas safety for council tenants

Brent Housing Partnership (BHP) is urging all council tenants to have a gas safety check to make sure their appliances are working well this winter.

Every year 30 people die in the UK form carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues that have not been properly installed or maintained.

But every council tenant in Brent is entitled to a free gas safety check to make sure their gas appliances are safe and working properly. If unsafe appliances go unchecked residents could be exposing themselves to potential gas leaks as well as carbon monoxide poisoning.

BHP director, Gerry Doherty, said: "Our residents' health and safety is of utmost importance to us. We provide gas safety checks to all tenants, it's free and we would urge them to use it."

Proper checks also ensure gas appliances are working efficiently as well as being safe to use.

If you think it's been more than one year since your last safety check then council tenants should call Brent Housing Partnership on 020 8937 2475.

Leaseholders, and other Brent residents who own their own homes, should ensure a Corgi registered engineer checks their appliances too.
