A courageous Brent Housing Partnership (BHP) warden, who braved a fire to save a resident, has won a national MITIE Star Award for his heroic efforts.
BHP warden Omar Jhungoor was announced first runner up and awarded a cash prize of £5000 at the security annual MITIE Star ceremony (15 September).
Managing Director of MITIE's security business Jeff Flanagan said: 'It was a difficult decision because all our finalists demonstrated true passion, determination and, in many cases, courage, bravery and heroism'.
In June of last year Omar was carrying out his routine inspections at Gloucester House in Kilburn when he noticed smoke coming from a seventh floor flat. Bravely he went to investigate and discovered a fire in the home of resident Ricky Neacy.
Quick thinking Omar got the tenant out of the flat to safety, called the fire brigade and then returned to evacuate the rest of the floor's tenants. He and other wardens carried young children down stairs, assisted elderly residents, and ensured that everyone got out calmly and safely.
"I'm just glad I was in the right place at the right time and could help - I only did what anyone else would do", said Omar. Warden services manager Jane Lambert said: "Omar is a truly inspirational and dedicated warden who shows passion for his job and is a shining example of the important work that wardens do. He is a credit to BHP's warden service and I am delighted that his work has been recognised at a national level."
"Our staff often go the extra mile to help our residents", said Helen Evans, BHP's managing director "but Omar went even further. We are very proud of him".
